When you join Sl you are broke as they come lol, there are plenty of great freebie places around though to get you started. Your riches (if you can call them that) come from your creations, designs and skills in the game.
Mostly though is a good idea to get yourself a little job just to tide you over in your Secondlife, to support yourself. once you have found out what you are particularly good at like textures, building, designing, scripting etc. then go to one of the many sandboxes on the grid to practice building and creating items. sell things to your friends etc.
I found the best way was to create a group and offer freebies to my group of my creations, that way I get feedback from them and is an incentive for people to join my group, aswell as word of mouth of people telling others where they got the item from. After i got a few orders, I opened up a little store. By no means am I rich in SL nor is most people, but the store supports itself in rent and also pays my tier on my land. Am happy with that and expect no more lol

Another suggestion, though people might laugh, is dancing. My first weeks in SL were spent dancing at a club that offered so many L$ per hour, basically a camping setup. SL businesses do this to keep their traffic up, and to have people there (afk or not) to make the place look busy. Search around, and don't be afraid to get a freebie furry av on, not gonna kill yeh.
